Oliver town council will review an application today to expand the food bank on Station Street.

There is a development permit application to construct a 720 square foot addition to the facility to be used as a dry storage area.

The applicant is requesting a variance permit to decrease the required off-street parking spaces from seven to zero.

Randy Houle, the town’s director of development services, said the proposed one-storey addition features stucco that will blend in well with the existing building.

He noted that no additional landscaping is proposed because the food bank is a non-profit with little funds for site improvements. However, since the property is owned by the town, it has the ability to add some trees.

Houle said the garbage and recycling area will be screened behind the addition.

The director said although there would be a significant reduction in parking spaces, the business is focused on gatherings primarily one day a week.

“The adjacent on-street parking spaces can accommodate this traffic volume,” Houle said.

Furthermore, the property has not been used for off-street parking since its inception in 2010, Houle pointed out.
