In honour of the anniversary of artist Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup exhibit, residents and staff at Sunshine Ridge Retirement Residence are looking to recreate the art installation — albeit they have more than 32 cans, and they all go to a good cause.
Warhol’s first exhibition of pop art comprised of 32 cans of Campbell’s Soup debuting on July 9, 1962 and was the inspiration for the can drive at Sunshine Ridge which now has over 200 soup cans to be given to the local Food Bank at the end of the month.
“We have done a lot of different things charities and that kind of stuff, but I thought how perfect for the Food Bank, and our residents are always behind us,” said Patricia Peart, recreation and events coordinator at Sunshine Ridge.

Mavis Adamson, ambassador for the soup drive and Sunshine Ridge resident, was immediately supportive of the idea.
“I gave her permission,” Adamson laughed.
Residents and staff are collecting donations until July 31.
“If we get more after we’re finished we will send it out,” Adamson said. “We don’t refuse anything.”
Most of the collection so far has been generated by residents, staff and family members of residents, but of course anyone can drop off canned goods, or other non-perishable food items at the retirement residence or the food bank.
