The Town of Oliver is looking into installing a four way stop on Fairview Road and Spartan Street as a traffic calming measure.
“It’s a quick way to slow traffic,” said Mayor Ron Hovanes at a recent Committee of the Whole meeting.
“It’s not going to hurt anybody,” he continued.
While Councillor Larry Schwartzenberger said he’s not a fan of four-way stops, he agreed with the safety logic.
Fellow Councillor Jack Bennest said it’s a residential area, so motorists should be slowing down anyway.
Director of Operations Shawn Goodsell said you don’t normally want to install stop signs on arterial roads.
Council directed staff to submit a report on proposal that will look at costs, with the intent to install the signs this summer.
Councillor Maureen Doerr expressed a concern about the crosswalk that was removed from Bank Avenue downtown, between Interior Savings and the CIBC.
“Traffic is stopping every which way; no one knows what’s going on,” Doerr said.
She noted that pedestrians think they can cross at the old crosswalk but subsequently find themselves walking out into traffic, with motorists slamming on their brakes.
Water councillor Andre Miller said he recently had a run-in with a pedestrian at this location.
“I stopped, they didn’t . . . they almost got hit.”
Director of Operations Shawn Goodsell said every intersection is a crosswalk (marked or not).
Town council agreed to send a letter to the provincial government regarding the concerns about this location.
