Oliver Chronicle editor Lyonel Doherty and managing director Linda Bolton receive the newspaper excellence award at the BCYCNA event in Richmond.
The Oliver Chronicle has reason to celebrate after winning gold for newspaper excellence at the BCYCNA awards in Richmond recently.
The Chronicle was nominated in its circulation category for best all-around newspaper in BC in 2015. It was competing against eight other publications.
Criteria judged included front page, community news, editorial, local features, sports, overall design, photography, production quality, advertising and classifieds. Derrick Robson was head of the production department at the time.
The judges said: “This is a great looking paper with a brilliant use of art. The stories dug into the issues with enthusiasm and were accompanied with a thoughtful editorial comment as well. Top marks in almost every category.”
The Chronicle also won third place for its “spot news” photo of Oliver firefighters rescuing a boy who fell through the ice on Tucelnuit Lake last year. This photo won gold in the CCNA (all of Canada) newspaper awards.
At the BCYCNA, the Osoyoos Times won gold for best feature article on last year’s wildfires.
Chronicle managing director Linda Bolton thanked everyone who contributed to the newspaper in 2015.
“It was a growing year, and we are the little paper with a big heart.”
