A limited number of physicians at South Okanagan General Hospital has resulted in a temporary change to emergency services this month.

Until January 31, all patients will be assessed by a registered nurse between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

This is due to some doctors currently on leave or experiencing illness.

Curtis Bell, Interior Health’s medical director for community and residential care, said there are five physicians who normally take shifts covering the hospital’s emergency department. But because some are dealing with personal issues right now, it’s hard to provide adequate coverage.

“It’s a challenge. There are not a lot of physicians in the emergency room, which makes it difficult to staff it 24-7,” Bell said.

He pointed out they want to avoid waking up doctors in the middle of the night to cover an issue that could be addressed by a nurse.

Bell noted that a couple of doctors at South Okanagan General Hospital have been taking on the majority of responsibilities, which is a “taxing” situation for them, particularly when their sleep is disrupted at home.

But patients deemed to have urgent needs between 11 p.m and 7 a.m. will be seen and cared for by a physician.

Those with less urgent needs will be encouraged to stay in order to see a physician later in the morning.

Patients who call an ambulance may be transported to Penticton Regional Hospital.

Interior Health confirms that the emergency department will remain open between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., and all patients will be assessed as usual by nurses.

Residents are asked to help the situation by ensuring their medications are full, and following their physician’s health care plan.

People who are unwell are advised to book an appointment with their family doctor. And if their symptoms persist, they are advised to visit the emergency department.

According to Interior Health, regular emergency room service will resume in February.
