If you’re going to the Oliver post office to get your mail, think again.

The Oliver RCMP are investigating the break-in of 63 mail boxes that were targeted Tuesday night.

Post office lead hand Brenda Pors said someone with a tool pried open the doors of 63 post office boxes sometime before the main doors were locked at 10 pm.

She noted that the majority of people’s mail was scattered on the floor, adding that a couple of small packages were ripped open as well. It is believed some of the contents were stolen.

Pors said there were no Christmas cards to be found, leading her to believe that the culprits were after money. She doesn’t believe the motive was identity theft.

“It’s terrible (especially this time of year),” Pors said.

In her 10 years of working at the post office, Pors has never seen any damage like this. Recently a couple of boxes were broken into, she said.

For the time being, people are not allowed access to their mail boxes.

Sergeant Blaine Gervais from the Oliver RCMP said the amount of mail stolen is unknown.

“The boxes were pried open randomly with personal identification not appearing to be the target.”

Gervais said the RCMP Forensics Identification Services attended and examined the scene looking for evidence left by the suspect(s). “There are no reported suspects or witnesses and no surveillance video available of the theft.”

If anyone has information about the crime please call the RCMP at 250-498-3422 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
