A black bear was tranquilized on Skagit Avenue this afternoon.

The RCMP was called to the neighbourhood near the intersection of Highway 97 for a report of a bear in a tree. The Oliver Fire Department was subsequently called to assist in apprehending the bruin.

A conservation officer previously shot the bear with a tranquilizer dart. The bear eventually fell out of the tree and was whisked away for relocation.

Fire department spokesman Rob Graham said this is the first time they have been called out to assist in capturing a bear.

An RCMP officer told the Chronicle that the more people want to get close and take pictures of bears, the more the bruins become habituated, resulting in the potential of the animals being shot.
