The Oliver Chronicle is very impressed with all of the graduates this year, and we believe they will do great things.

It was difficult to choose the recipient of the Oliver Chronicle bursary for $1,000. All of the applicants were excellent, but here is why we chose Lexi Anderson for the award:

My name is Lexi Anderson, a Grade 12 student graduating from S.O.S.S.

I plan to pursue a degree in social work and with this degree I want to start my career as a juvenile probation officer. As a student who has attended three different high schools, I’ve witnessed so many of my peers as well as friends go down the wrong path; I myself haven’t had the easiest high school “career.”

I feel that I would really excel in this line of work because I would be able to understand and relate exactly to how the people I would see every day are feeling. My goal is to really put my heart into my work and try my best to understand and help the younger community specifically to what an individual needs. I know I can’t save the world, but I’m determined to help a person or two.

I think the worst mistake people can make in this line of work is assuming kids are just bad, but in my opinion they’re just lost and need a push in the right direction with the help of someone they can trust and feel comfortable around; moreover, I would strive to become that person.

I think I deserve this bursary because I feel I fit the criteria of what you’re looking for. I am inspired to help people, especially the youth, as they are our future. As the oldest of four children I am paying for school on my own without the assistance of student loans. I have been a hard worker since the age of 15 working full time during the summers and part time throughout the school year.

I would be honored to receive this bursary and would hopefully make you guys at the Chronicle proud.
