From the moment you step into the room, your senses are awakened.
A variety of oils, from cinnamon to lemon, from eucalyptus to peppermint, overwhelm you. I have entered into the domain of Sherri Berukoff, who operates Young Living Essential Oils out of her home on Salamander Avenue in Oliver.
On this particular day in January, Berukoff was hosting an open house, and opened her home to anyone who wanted to learn more about the benefits of essential oils in our lives.
“I really could go on and on with my Essential Oils. I just don’t sell them. I use them daily and see how they have changed our lives,” insists Berukoff. “From cooking and cleaning to pet care and home remedies, essential oils provide many alternatives to harsh chemical products, allowing you to create the environment your family deserves. In fact, these products are used extensively in aromatherapy and various traditional medicinal systems, due to the numerous health benefits of essential oils.”
Berukoff says people would be surprised to know that many of the products they purchase on a day-to-day basis have essential oils in them, including Buckley’s cold medicine, Gravol, shampoos, dish soap, and Johnson & Johnson baby lotion. And, essential oils are sometimes the most important ingredient in food processing to produce fruit juices, frozen desserts and bakery products.
“With essential oils you can make your own hand soap, home cleaners, and many other products, but without all the harmful ingredients that you find in the ones on the store shelves,” insists Berukoff, while explaining just how essential oils have helped her family. “No flu shot this year with the use of my essential oils. I have two children in Grade 5 and 2 and many kids in their classroom have had the flu and a cold. With our use of the essential oils we have not experienced the cold or flu. With other medical issues we also have in our home, such as MS and asthma, we have used our essential oils to help ease many symptoms. Our daughter was on inhaler for two years, she has been off it for three months now and doing very well. I diffuse peppermint and thieves oil for her.”
Berukoff wants to get the point across that these essential oils are safe to use when their properties are understood, and that she does work with her doctor on preventative health measures, and to gain a better understanding of how essential oils have been of benefit to her family.
She has a few suggestions as to the many ways Essential Oils can help a person in their day-to-day life:
“Stop buying juices full of sugar and try adding a couple of drops of lemon/orange or grapefruit oils into a glass of water (lemon oil is rich in limonene, which helps heighten immune function.) Our body works better with water and natural oils. Lavender oils can help relax and also helps with sleep,” explains Berukoff. “One of my favourite oils is the RC oil, using it for cold/flu symptoms (it’s like opening a jar of vapor rub without the added chemicals) Peppermint can also help clear your sinus.”
Vickie Solien/Hitch and her friend Carolyn Ellis attended Berukoff’s Make and Take Open House held January 12.
“She had stations set up of various choices of products so we could learn to make it ourselves using natural and non-chemical products. Each product has some kind of essential oils in it to benefit our bodies,” explained Solien/Hitch. “We were to pick three items to make and it was difficult to choose as everything is so healthy and useful in our homes for us and our families. The products are very simple to make and Sherri was very informative and helpful. It was a very calming and relaxing atmosphere. Goodies and refreshments were available that had the essential oils used as some are edible.”
All these Essential Oils can be used in the following ways: inhalation, topical application, and internal consumption.
Berukoff’s Valentine’s special open house will be held February 8.
