Oliver council has approved a one-time grant-in-aid of $500 each to help send two South Okanagan Minor Hockey Association teams to the provincial championships this year.

At Monday’s committee of the whole meeting, Tom Fortune from the league requested financial assistance for the midget and pee wee teams that have earned a place in the tournament.

Fortune said each player will bear a huge expense to attend the championships, so they are looking for help to offset costs. He noted the boys have been busy raising funds by collecting recyclables and bagging groceries.

Fortune said the association doesn’t like approaching businesses for money.

Councillor Maureen Doerr said the Town should support these youth since it no longer gives grant-in-aid to the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Mayor Ron Hovanes said playing in the provincial championships is an incredible opportunity.
