An Oliver man is warning others to be wary of a telephone scam that he received last week.

Peter Ginter said he answered the phone to hear a recorded message about the FBI alerting people about residential break-ins in the Oliver area. The message also indicated that local police were urging residents to install security systems in their homes.

“I knew it was bogus because we don’t deal with the FBI in Canada. It’s a rip-off, they’re trying to scam people,” Ginter said.

He suspects the people behind the scam are trying to target seniors by playing on their fears.

Ginter said it may be a ploy to get into your home, or the system, once installed, may not work. He urges people to hang up on the call, just like he did.

Ginter said despite all of the awareness about telephone scams, people still fall for them. He agreed that it’s important to question anything that sounds suspicious.

“I don’t buy into anything (if it is suspicious.”

In this case, the Oliver RCMP has not reported any residential break-ins to the media or posted any alerts about this.

Police caution people to be wary about potential telephone scams.
