If her future plans to make a positive impact on the world of medicine are indicative of how she approaches her studies at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, then Anmol Dhaliwal will undoubtedly do just that.

The 17-year-old Oliver native received her high school diploma in June and began her post-secondary education in September. She is studying chemical engineering and plans to attend UBC later on to study pharmacology.

As a result of her hard work, she received SOSS’s Academic Cup just before convocation, and more recently, the Governor-General’s Bronze Medal for academic excellence at the secondary school level.

She received the medal during a presentation held at SOSS on October 11.

The Governor-General’s academic medals are awarded annually to students who achieve academic excellence at four levels; bronze, collegiate bronze, silver and gold.

The bronze medal is awarded to the student with the highest average upon graduation from secondary school.

Since first being awarded in 1873, this medal has become one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive.

Dhaliwal said she was shocked to hear that she had won the Academic Cup and the Governor General’s medal but added that she is grateful for the recognition.

“I did not see it coming but I feel really lucky. It honestly should have gone to someone else. It’s an honour to get something like this,” she said.
