The eight-year-old boy who fought so valiantly to survive a motorhome fire on August 28 fights no more.

Cody O’Connor died last Friday at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice after being taken off life support.

He had suffered second-degree burns to his upper body following a fire in a motorhome at Centennial RV Park in Oliver. The cause has yet to be determined.

Pearl De Prez, Cody’s grandmother, said he passed away peacefully in a sunny garden at 3 pm on September 13.

“He just couldn’t fight it any longer . . . as soon as the last line was unhooked, he went very peacefully. The doctors told us it could be minutes or as long as two days, so none of us expected it to be so soon.”

The Oliver Fire Department expressed its sympathy to the family with the following statement: “On behalf of the Oliver Fire Department and all our families we would like to express our deepest condolences to the O’Connor family. We are saddened to hear of Cody’s passing and our prayers go out to the family.”

Karen Sinclair, vice-principal of Oliver Elementary School, said Cody was due to start Grade 3 this September.

“I remember Cody to always have a smile on his face,” she said.

An online fundraising campaign was launched recently to help the family. More than $1,000 has been raised so far.
