School District 53 will not be expanding daycare spaces at Osoyoos Elementary.

That was the decision agreed upon at a recent board meeting.

Finance and Facilities Committee chairman Sam Hancheroff said trustees discussed providing space for a daycare in the school based on feedback from the community.

(But) “There was consensus by committee members that there are sufficient daycare spaces in the community and additional space is not required at this time.”

At a recent forum in Osoyoos, some parents voiced their desire to have more daycare options in town.

Board chair Marieze Tarr said she understands parents want a choice, but noted there are enough daycare spaces already in Osoyoos. She noted there is a daycare centre only a stone’s throw away from the school.
