You know the snow load on Mt. Baldy is huge when trees start breaking from the weight.
So says ski area marketing director and snowboard instructor Josh Shulman.
“It’s fantastic . . . we’re looking at the best early season opening conditions that we’ve seen in 40 years.”
Shulman said there is nearly two metres of snow in the alpine, and some argue it’s the deepest they’ve ever seen this time of year.
More than 100 trees in the area have broken from the snow load, he reported.
“Our mountain looks like it does in March with the snowpack.”
Shulman said people typically bring out their old skis this time of year because they normally hit a rock or two. But not this year; people are strapping on their best skis because the snow is so deep.
What’s new at Mt. Baldy this year?
Shulman said they have a new “Baldy Bombers” freestyle ski and snowboard program for kids ages 10-18.
Mount Baldy has also jumped on the social media bandwagon via Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
Also new this season is the face of Shayna Merrit, the new food and beverage manager from Hillside Estate Winery.
Shulman said Christmas Eve events include a torchlight parade and activities for children. “You might even see Santa,” he hinted.
Mount Baldy will close on Christmas day and resume operations on December 26. New Year’s Eve celebrations will include dinner and live music.
The ski hill will host a winter carnival on February 16-17.
