The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 173 has contributed $500 to the Books for Babies program run by the South Okanagan Community Literacy Society. To encourage youngsters to appreciate books and develop early learning, the society gives a bag containing two books to new babies through the Osoyoos Public Health Unit – one book is a hardcover pop-up book for very young children and the other is a softcover book for children when they get a little older. The Osoyoos library branch also participates in the program. Standing are Garry Sutton, representing the Legion and Pat Buckland, secretary of the Literacy Society. Seated are Lesley Hanson, public health nurse, and Chrissie Serry, the mother of 16-month-old Mia Serry. For more information on the program, South Okanagan Community Literacy Society can be reached at 250-498-8433. (Richard McGuire photo)
