Dear Editor:
This letter is written regarding the ill feelings between local environmentalists and off road vehicle owners that appeared in the March 25 edition of the Osoyoos Times.
Rather than see this issue escalate further, I would suggest that the concerned parties look at the overall picture.
Since I have come to live in British Columbia some 78 years ago, there has been logging in all areas.
The environmental damage has been tremendous, yet it has been the basis of our economy in this province.
We can’t shut down that industry can we?
Also, the sale of four-wheel drive vehicles, ATV’s and all other motorized vehicles is part of our economy as well.
Our tax dollars build us highways, so we can transport our goods and travel.
Has it ever been calculated how much square mileage is covered in pavement in this province?
Since most of us pay taxes, doesn’t that make us all responsible for destroying the environment?
Perhaps some day, a group could be formed possibly called LGROE, which stands for Let’s Get Rid of Everything.
Then everyone could walk as suggested, although there might be strong opposition from a lot of people.
Furthermore, no amount of legislation or policing will get rid of the senseless use of vehicles as evidenced by the accidents that take place on our highways each and every day.
Thank you for your consideration on this topic of interest in our community.
