Dawn MacRae from Oliver is the new Osoyoos Idol after edging out two-time winner Sue Gerrard in Saturday evening’s singing competition.
Seventeen contestants participated and were narrowed down in three rounds based on scores awarded by three judges. The competition was held at the Gyro Park bandshell.
Gerrard placed second despite receiving perfect scores in the first and second rounds. The judges did not release scoring on the final round.
Placing third was Sarah Duperron, a young Osoyoos Secondary School graduate from Oliver easily recognizable by her colourfully dyed hair, which was magenta on Saturday.
Also recognized as male singer was Emmanuel Brunet of Oliver and as female was Robin Bickner of Keremeos. Recognized as crowd favourites were Tom Lavine of Osoyoos and eight-year-old Christina Hollingworth of Edmonton.
There were 14 contestants preregistered and three who registered just before the competition, including MacRae, for a total of 17 who competed in the first round.
When scores were tabulated, 10 contestants were chosen to go on to a second round. These were MacRae, Gerrard, Duperon, Brunet, Bickner, Lavine and Hollingworth as well as Isa Bueno, a former Rotary exchange visitor from Brazil, Maggie McDonald of Cawston and Lisa Wadge of Olala.
In the first round, both MacRae and Gerrard had perfect 10-10-10 scores. In the second, MacRae received 9-9-10 while Gerrard kept her perfect 10-10-10.
