Dear Editor:

I read the recent article in the Osoyoos Times regarding these so-called “smart meters” and the already burgeoning controversy over their installation by FortisBC in Osoyoos.
I have to agree with the lady who started the petition to keep them out of this town.
We already have a system that works here with the current meters and I cannot see for the life of me why FortisBC needs to replace the meters already in place with these new ones.
Regardless of their reasoning, I am vehemently opposed to having one installed on my property and hope that the town council will at least make it possible for property owners who are opposed to their installation can opt out.
In addition to not knowing the effects of these devices on human health, I’m sure that we have all heard the horror stories of vastly inflated power bills after these devices have been installed.
And let’s face it folks, these things have to cost a bundle and guess who will end up footing the bill?
I don’t know about anyone else, but my power bill is high enough already and I am a pensioner on a fixed income.  We don’t need or want these smart meters here in our town.
