The fourth annual Dance Oasis recital Reach for the Moon and Dance Amongst the Stars is shaking into the Osoyoos Secondary School (OSS) Mini Theatre this weekend, holding two separate performances on June 23 and 24.
“We are very excited,” said Chrissie Serry, artistic director with Dance Oasis. “We have over 50 numbers spread between both shows.”
More than 100 students from Dance Oasis will be taking part in these two shows, which will include nearly every dance genre there is, said Serry,
“We have everything from ballet, jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre, modern contemporary dance and belly dancing as well,” said Serry. “So it’s going to be a very entertaining show for all ages.”
This year’s theme is “shoot for your dreams,” said Serry.
Because of all the hard work the kids put into these shows, this is their time to really dance amongst the stars and shine for the people of Osoyoos, she said.
“We’re making it a magical night,” said Serry.
Serry said after watching her students work so hard throughout the season, to see it all come to fruition leaves her with nothing but the utmost pride.
“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Serry. “It’s been a big year for us. Lots of changes and lots of new instructors and a lot of kids have really branched out this year into other genres of dance that they weren’t as comfortable with. So this year, to see them perform and do such a good job and do so well in competition, I just couldn’t be more proud.”
“It’s been amazing and we’ve had tons of support from the parents and community this year, which really helps make these things happen.”
Speaking of doing so well in competitions, the girls of Dance Oasis recently competed in their annual slew of events and managed to take home more than 50 awards, certificates, medals and prizes, something Serry said, again, leaves her bursting with pride.
“I’m just extremely proud once again,” said Serry. “We took so many first-timers to competitions this year and our kids did extremely well. There were placements throughout every competition we went to, not to mention plaques and trophies and medallions won.
“These kids are placing first out of 500 kids. Not one out of 10, but one out of 500, so that’s a huge, huge honour and it just goes to show just how dedicated these kids are to really perfecting their genres and their pieces. It’s just awesome.”
Reach for the Moon and Dance Amongst the Stars will hit the OSS Mini Theatre this weekend, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the shows starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Dance Oasis in Osoyoos.
“I’d just love for people in the community to come and check out what these kids are doing,” said Serry.
“Even people who might not have kids in dance, just come for the entertainment and you will enjoy yourself.”
