COUNCIL COULD DEFINITELY MAKE SHELTER PROPOSAL MORE OF A PRIORITY

OSOYOOS TIMES-January 7, 2009

Osoyoos's new town council may have made its first misstep by putting a proposition to use the Cactus Centre as an emergency weather shelter on the backburner.

This winter has already been particularly harsh for Osoyoos and there are people sleeping in tents around town in sub-zero temperatures, harsh winds and heavy snowfalls.

Yes, prudence is necessary in making sure the Cactus Centre would be safe for those needing shelter and the issue of liability needs to be considered.

Questions about how it would look if someone were to die in the shelter have already come up.

But would it not look equally bad if someone were found frozen to death on one of our beaches?

There's still quite a bit of winter to go and having a shelter in place to take in people needing warmth in bad weather seems like an idea to jump on right away.
