RCMP are investigating a disturbing incident in which human remains were found in a burned Ford pickup truck east of Oliver on Tuesday.

Oliver RCMP Sgt. Blaine Gervais reported that police were called to a remote location at approximately 8:40 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed a recently burned truck, and on closer inspection, they noticed human remains in the fire debris. The Oliver Fire Department had already attended the scene to suppress any fire surrounding the vehicle.

“The person who was in the vehicle has not been identified at this time,” Gervais said. “The cause of fire and why a person was inside the vehicle is not known.”

Currently Oliver RCMP Frontline members are partnering with the RCMP South East Major Crime Unit, the BC Coroner and Forensic investigators, who are all on scene.

The deceased person has not yet been identified. Due to extensive damage to the vehicle, the model and type has not been positively confirmed, however BC RCMP say there is some indication the vehicle was previously stolen out of Penticton.

Investigators are currently trying to determine the cause of the fire, and the identity of the deceased person.

Anyone with information regarding any of these investigations is asked to contact their nearest police agency or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
