The Town of Oliver is getting ready to amend its sign regulation bylaw to include provisions for wine barrel signage.

On July 13, council gave first three readings to the bylaw, which is set for adoption on July 27. The bylaw also includes provisions for bed and breakfast operations and vacation rentals.

Randy Houle, director of development services, said the bylaw addresses nine amendments, including adding advertising flags into the definition of portable signs.

The bylaw also removes the word billboard sign and replaces it with third-party signage (which covers all types of signage).

Houle said another amendment is adding the definition of wine barrel signage, defined as wine barrel heads used as signage. He noted this amendment will exempt them from building permits, which “actually reduces liability to the town.”

There are limitations, though. For example, one portable sign per business, and the total dimension must not exceed one metre square. In addition, the sign can only be displayed during business hours.

Councillor Aimee Grice said wine barrel signage is a great idea.

“It really ties all of downtown together and brings that wine capital theme to Main Street.”

Councillor Petra Veintimilla said she would be interested in hearing from people with concerns about accessibility relating to these signs.
