Over the holidays, residents in the rural Regional District that have curbside garbage collection on Wednesdays will have their garbage and recycling collection pushed back three days to Saturday. Collection scheduled for December 25th will now be on Saturday December 28th. The collection scheduled for Wednesday January 1st will be collected on Saturday January 4th.

This change affects only residents in Okanagan Falls, Kaleden, Twin Lakes, Skaha Estates, St. Andrews and Heritage Hills in Electoral Areas ‘D’ and ‘I’ with Wednesday curbside collection. Other rural RDOS collection days over the holidays will not be affected.

This year all rural RDOS properties and the Village of Keremeos will get three straight weeks of recycling collection starting on the week of Christmas.

“Having three straight weeks of recycling collection from Christmas to the second week in January will help families keep recycling out of the landfill,” explains Karla Kozakevich, RDOS Chair. “Christmas creates a huge pulse of recycling and this extra collection will make it easier to manage.”

Wednesday collections on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day also affect garbage and recycling collections in the municipalities of Penticton, Summerland and Princeton. Residents in these communities should check with their curbside calendar or local government for details.

If a missed collection happens during the holidays then residents should contact their local waste collector. In the rural RDOS, residents should contact Waste Connections of Canada at 250-490-3888, 250-498-4888 or toll free 1-866-998-4888. When leaving a message, residents should leave their address and contact information. Waste Connections will work with the resident on what options are available for their property.

If materials are not collected by the evening of collection day, residents are asked to bring their materials back in. This will help reduce animals getting into garbage and recycling. Residents can contact Waste Connection to find out whether they can come back that week or will collect extra garbage the next week. Extra recycling can always be placed out at the next scheduled recycling collection week.
