Fire officials are still investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a fruit packinghouse south of Oliver on May 25.

Oliver fire department spokesman Rob Graham said the structure (in the 5400 block of Highway 97) was fully engulfed in flames when the first trucks arrived on scene just after 1 a.m.

“The fire was extremely hot and efforts to get water on the fire were difficult due to damaged power lines that had come down,” Graham said.

Portable tanks were set up and tenders began shuttling water to the scene from a nearby hydrant near Road 5.

“Crews worked very hard to get the fire under control but were unable to save any of the structure,” Graham said.

Firefighters remained on scene until 8 a.m. to extinguish hot spots.

No injuries were reported, and no cause has been determined.
