An Oliver man who is well known to police has been given more jail time for a disturbing axe fight that occurred with local RCMP nine months ago.
Steve Joseph Godbout was convicted of several charges in Penticton court earlier this week stemming from an incident in which he used an axe to break into a vacant commercial building on Main Street in February.
The court heard how a witness observed the 51-year-old male use the axe to gain entry via a back door.
Members of the RCMP showed up with a police dog to investigate the report and ended up struggling with the suspect to remove the axe. According to police testimony, Godbout had the axe raised above his head while confronted by members and the dog.
Police eventually subdued the man without serious injury.
Godbout was charged with break and enter, resisting arrest, breach of probation and assaulting police. He was sentenced to more than two years in jail, with credit for time already served.
Godbout was previously sentenced to two years for breaking into a shed near a cell phone tower in Oliver in 2016.
He also ran afoul of the law for a couple of arson fires, including a dumpster fire behind Oliver Place mall.
