A “business as usual” budget issue in School District 53 has at least one Osoyoos resident concerned.

Brenda Dorosz is questioning the board’s capital funding request of $3.1 million for a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system for Osoyoos Secondary School.

“That’s a lot of money to spend on a new HVAC system,” she said.

In addition, Dorosz worries that if the board doesn’t receive the funding, where will the money come from?

“It will have to come from somewhere.”

But Debby Sansome, the district’s director of facilities, said this issue is just business as usual.

She explained that each year the board submits five-year capital plan proposals to the Ministry of Education. And a mechanical upgrade at Osoyoos Secondary School was part of last year’s proposal.

“Whether or not it will be approved is out of our hands. The system is aging out and due for replacement.”
