The Oliver Osoyoos Search and Rescue (OOSAR) successfully rescued two adult hikers on July 1 after the pair had become lost after going off route in the McKinney Nordic Ski Area.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. on July 1, OOSAR was tasked by the RCMP to search for two adult hikers who had become lost.
With limited phone battery and very poor cell coverage, the hikers had difficulty providing an accurate location. The OOSAR sent a location text, which they eventually received, allowing teams to pinpoint their exact position.
The hikers followed instructions to shelter in place, which greatly assisted the search effort, the OOSAR said in a media release.
“By midnight, search teams located the hikers – cold and stressed, but otherwise in good health – and safely escorted them out.”

OOSAR volunteers consult a map as they search for the lost hikers.

Brenda Arychuk, OOSAR Information Officer, said planning ahead is one of the most important steps people can take before heading outdoors at any time of year.
“A trip plan outlines your destination, route, equipment, and expected return time – critical details that help authorities respond quickly in an emergency. AdventureSmart also offers free, easy-to-access online resources.”
Arychuk added, “If no one knows you are missing, no one will know to search for you. Fortunately, these hikers still had some phone battery and enough cell service to contact the RCMP – something that is not always possible in the backcountry.”
She also noted the importance to carry a whistle or air horn saying, “After the hikers were found, they said they could hear searchers calling, but searchers could not hear their replies.
“Carrying a whistle or air horn can help attract attention. When travelling in the wilderness, we also recommend carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it.” If you become lost or injured, sheltering in place is often the safest option, Arychuk said.

OOSAR thanks its dedicated volunteers and the RCMP for their coordination and support.
