Marcia “Jean” Burt
December 22, 1923 – August 11, 2025
It is with profound sadness that the family of Marcia “Jean” Burt announce her passing on August 11, 2025, at the venerable age of 101.
Jean was born to John and Myrtle Paulding on December 22, 1923, in Vancouver, BC, the oldest of two children, and spent most of the first decade of her life in New Westminister. When her paternal grandmother was ill, her father temporarily moved the family across country to Hamilton, ON; but apart from a brief stint in Illinois working at a munitions factory in WW2, she ending up staying in Hamilton until 1956.
During WW2 the Moose Lodge had their teen girls write encouraging letters and knit hats and socks to send to the enlisted men. That is how she first met her future husband, Roy. It turned out they had lived not far from each other in Hamilton when they were both in their early teens, but far enough apart that they never met. Jean and Roy continued to correspond and meet when he was home on leave and they married on November 1, 1944. When the war was over they settled in Hamilton where they built the first of four houses.
But her heart never left BC; and having been stationed on the BC coast during his first year of naval service, Roy had himself fallen in love with Jean’s childhood home. So, in 1956 they packed up and headed to Victoria. On the way, they stopped in Penticton to visit friends of friends and the Okanagan captured them; they spent the rest of their lives in the Okanagan, moving to Osoyoos in 1972, where they built their last house.
It was in Penticton where Jean first began her journey into the art world; and in Osoyoos she was a founding member of the Osoyoos Art Club. Art was her favourite pasttime. She started with painting and sketching and in Osoyoos added pottery, eventually trying her hand at such varied things as wire sculpting, lino printing and copper etching.
Jean is survived by her son Philip (Sheree) and daughter Laurel Pinske, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren (one is due in December), and two great-great grandchildren.
There will be no service at this time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Osoyoos Art Gallery.
