Betty Lou Thomson

July 27, 1947 – July 17, 2024

On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, Betty Lou Thomson of Vernon passed away peacefully at the Kelowna General Hospital at the age of 76.

She is predeceased by her husband Charles (Chuck, Papa Shuck) Smith; sister Beverly Thomson; brothers Robert, Bill and Allan Thomson; sisters-in-law Klare and Bernice Thomson; and nephew Andrew Thomson.

Betty is survived by her children Roberta Gizen, Shannon Becker, Cheryl LaRocque (Don), Charlie and Kathy Smith, Patrick Smith, and David Smith; grandchildren Tyson, Brittany (Matt), Sydney, Kael, Jordan, Chris (Tammy), Jennifer, Stephanie (Dennis); eleven great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law June Thomson.

Betty worked as the office manager for the Osoyoos Medical Centre and subsequently Desert Doctors until she retired in 2012. She loved gardening, reading and above all else, family. Betty travelled as often as she could home to Alberta to visit her siblings, nieces, and nephews.
While Papa Shuck was alive, they spent hours in their yard together and enjoyed each other’s company immensely.
Betty lived in Osoyoos, BC for 39 years before moving to Vernon, BC in 2019. Once she moved to Vernon, she continued to enjoy her family and gardening, volunteering at the Schubert Centre, and always looked forward to her Lady’s Coffee Group.

She will be remembered for her smile, quick wit, and humour.

The family would like to thank the support teams at the Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Cancer Centre, Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Kelowna General Hospital, her GP Dr. Paul Mori, and her dear friend Charla Kelly.
Their exceptional care and support for both our mom and for us during this extremely difficult time was unfaltering.
