The Oliver Fire Department has been busy this month practicing responding to extractions from burning vehicles and also honing their Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT) skills.

“Our vehicle fire practice was unique as we also performed auto extraction while the vehicle was still burning, this was performed as a “hasty” rescue in the event our crews arrive on scene to a patient trapped inside a burning vehicle and extrication is required,” the OFD said on in a social media post.

Meanwhile, the department also focused on practicing rescues involving Rapid Intervention Teams which  are the members assigned to rescue downed or injured firefighters on scene. These are firefighters that could, for instance, be trapped by falling debris or suffering from a medical issue.

Members in this practice were required to package their patient and then move them to the extrication point which in the practice scenario required them to crawl under a low trailer simulating the tight quarters they may encounter in a real situation, the OFD said.
