The Town of Oliver has provided an update on the Co-op Avenue Reconstruction Project with the 24-hour closure over the last six months now reduced to day-time closures by the town’s contractor.

The project which kicked off on April 30 is still anticipated to be completed by September 30, with the town saying it will provide additional updates as they become available.

The dewatering construction activities that saw the road closed 24 hours a day for a month and a half were completed on Friday, June 28. To date the sanitary sewer, reclaimed water, and water main improvements have been completed, the town said.

Construction activities will continue on the road between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as needed.

“The closure status is expected to fluctuate depending on the stage of work and the task,” according to the town.

Local business traffic will continue to have intermittent access and the public will have access before and after working hours “whenever possible”. Drivers are also reminded that until the works are complete this will remain a construction site and road conditions can not be guaranteed.

Among the benefits that the Co-op Avenue reconstruction project will bring to the town are 230 metres of sidewalk to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility, a significant increase in parking options and a new three-way traffic stop at Co-op Avenue and Station Street will further bolster traffic management, reduce congestion and potential accidents, it said.

In addition to the road and sidewalk enhancements, the project encompasses crucial underground infrastructure improvements to Oliver’s sanitary sewer, storm sewer, reclaimed water, and potable water systems. These upgrades will enhance the reliability and efficiency of our utilities and ensure more efficient transportation.

As with any construction project, there may be noise and dust the town warned adding it is committed to minimizing disruptions during construction.

The town also urged drivers and pedestrians to follow construction signs and instructions from traffic personnel.
