The proposed Oliver and District Recreational Advisory Committee (ODRAC) makeup has been altered on its way to approval to include more members of the public.
The Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) board of directors approved the new makeup at their Jan. 4 meeting and the town of Oliver did the same at their Jan 8 meeting.
Membership of the committee will be composed of up to eight members including:
• Town of Oliver mayor or their alternate;
• RDOS electoral area “C” director or their alternate;
• One School District No. 53 school trustee appointed member;
• One Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB) council appointed member;
• Up to two unelected members of the public from the Town of Oliver, appointed on the recommendation of the Town of Oliver;
• Up to two unelected members of the public from RDOS electoral area “C”, appointed on the recommendation of the RDOS.
Mayor Martin Johansen explained that the original makeup was changed as “not to be heavy with political appointments.” Johansen also noted that these appointments are on a two year term.
With the approval by town council and the RDOS board of directors, the town will begin recruitment for the committee.
This new recreational advisory committee is the official replacement for the Oliver Parks and Recreation Society which was formally dissolved as of Dec. 31, 2023.
This change is the result of the Town of Oliver and the RDOS agreeing to transition the operation of Oliver Parks and Recreation programs to the town, after being run by the previous society since 2005.
