To pee or not to pee, that is the question for some, but not an available option for locals walking between Gyro Beach and Veterans Walkway in Osoyoos.
Ron Sargeant brought up the issue of two public washrooms – Gyro Beach and Veterans Walkway – that are closed to the public in the winter months, at the December 6 open budget council meeting.
In the discussion Mayor Sue McKortoff responded that these washrooms are closed because they “are old and the pipes freeze.”
In response Sargeant quickly noted that an electric heater is placed in the washroom at Goodman Park and the washroom is the same size and stays open all winter.
Sargeant made a further point after mentioning the nearby Home Hardware, saying that, “it should not be on them to provide a washroom for the public.”
McKortoff ended the discussion by saying, “there are some washroom upgrades in the budget which we will be dealing with in the next two days. I appreciate you pointing that out, thank you very much.”
This is not the first time this problem has come up, with the topic being brought up each year when the washrooms close for the winter.
In 2016 the Gyro Park washroom was the location of a series of concerning incidents including illegal drug use and vandalism which caused the town council to close the washroom during the winter months.
