Campfire bans came into effect from noon Thursday (Aug. 4) for three of six fire centres around the province including the Kamloops Fire Centre region which includes Oliver and Osoyoos.
The Southeast Fire Centre stretching from the Alberta border across the southern portion of the province also has a campfire ban from Aug. 4, 2022, at 12 p.m., as does the Coastal Fire Centre around the lower mainland and northwards up the coast including Haida Gwaii.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) notes the province is large and geographically diverse and for that reason, “decisions on when and where to implement fire bans and restrictions are made by B.C.’s six regional fire centres.”
Multiple factors are taken into consideration when assessing wildfire hazards and deciding whether to implement an open fire prohibition, including current and forecasted weather conditions; the availability of firefighting resources and the Buildup Index (BUI).
Four fires of note are currently burning in the Kamloops Fire Centre while the Southeastern Fire Centre has two fires of note. There are a total of 62 wildfires currently burning in the province as of Friday noon (Aug 5).

Current fires in B.C. as of noon on July 5.
