Martha Lowenberg (nee Scheske)

June 18, 1926 -
May 18, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we share with you the passing of our mother, Martha Phillipina Scheske (Phyllis), at 95 years old. She was born June 18, 1926, in St. Boswells, Saskatchewan and passed away on her husband’s birthday, May 18, 2022. She was the first born child of Katharina and Gotlieb Scheske. Phyllis is what her mother called her because Phillipina was her grandmother, and now a grandchild has her name too.

The family later moved to Grenfell, where she was raised. At the age of 19 she was married to Arthur Edwin Lowenberg and they continued to live in the Grenfell area where they reared five children: Cheryl, Larry, Darlene, Deborah, and John. Those children gave birth to 8 grand-children: Jennifer, Raequel, Jason, Tina, Katherine, Samantha, Jennifer, and Ember. And they produced 16 great-grandchildren: Daisy, Lucas, Garreth, Grace, Eddy-Layne, Samantha, Ryan, Seth, Elizabeth, Hadley, Charlize, Kaylin, Robin, Nicolas, Alissa, and Tatum.  And one great great grandchild, Evelynn. Also surviving her are her siblings, Lenore Sabiston, Donald Scheske, and Dianne Bonk. She was predeceased by her husband, twin brothers (Carl and Ronald), and her first born son (Larry).

The Lowenberg family lived in Grenfell, Moose Jaw, La Ronge, Phoenix Arizona, and finally Oliver, BC where they retired. Art and Phyllis spent their days travelling Canada and the USA. While Art fished, Phyllis created wonderful art in the forms of pottery, needlework, gardening, cooking, writing, music, and paintings from many mediums and genre. Together Art and Phyl enjoyed shuffleboard and the great outdoors. They had full and eventful lives and now they are together again with the Lord.

Phyllis Lowenberg passed away quietly at dinner time on May 18, 2022, at the Sunnybank Retirement Centre in Oliver, BC.

We thank all the many people of Oliver and especially Sunnybank, who spent time with mom, wrote her letters, did her hair up in flowers, and talked about her paintings which hung all over her room. Your kindness was genuinely felt. Thank you to the entertainers who played instruments, sang songs, and danced. She laughed and sang and enjoyed it so much, especially You Are My Sunshine. Thank you to the Pastors for coming to Sunnybank every week, they need your encouragement and comfort. Thank you teachers for bringing your students to visit the centre. The stimulation and constant distraction is so beneficial to the seniors.

Thank you Oliver, BC. You are a great place to live.
