Tracy David Sim | Reporter
Before I had a chance to make any New Year’s resolutions, something really great happened. I’m Tracy Sim, and I’ve recently been hired as a reporter at your local paper after settling in Oliver almost a year ago.
Last year, I was fortunate to experience and learn about the importance of the wine industry here in the South Okanagan. I was born south of our border in, Moses Lake, Washington State, in 1962 to Canadian parents. My father ran a high school football program there, until the call of the ocean called him back to the Vancouver area in 1972. We settled in Coquitlam, BC, where I lived for over 45-years.
In 2017, I was able to experience life on the road in an RV and saw the many ways of life across Canada and throughout North America before finally settling in Oliver. Of all the places I’ve seen and experienced, nothing left me with a greater impression of ‘the good life’ than the South Okanagan. I’m very pleased to be a part of your kitchen table or wherever you read the Times-Chronicle this year.
I’ve enjoyed writing everything from fiction to business and other forms of writing. When I’m not writing, I like to get up and move. A good daily walk or a bike ride along the dykes here are a way to meditate on what I want to achieve. During the really cold days this winter, I made a model power boat inspired by my dad’s commercial fishing trawler I used to work aboard in my younger years.
Something I’m also quite passionate about are rocks, gems, and minerals. I love stones with complex patterns like certain agates and other stones. What did you do during your days of being home these last two years? Did you create something interesting? Do you have an unusual job in an unusual place? Or how about an unusual collection? If you do, I’d love to hear about it. Everything from churches, to baking, to manufacturing, these are all things that bind our community together.
Stories are everywhere and they’re made by you. If you have a point-of-view or do something unique, be it a hobby, something you made or something you do in the community you’d like to share, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
