Ernest Race
On Thursday, January 6, 2022, Mr. Ernest Race of Oliver passed away peacefully at his son Phil’s home in Cranbrook at the age of 91 years.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Barbara of 60 years. Ernest will be fondly remembered by his loving family including sons Jon (Dee) and Phil (Jan) and grandchildren Franki and Brett.
Ernie worked in mining from a young age starting in England, then Africa, onto Canada, starting in the NWT, Yukon and eventually BC. In 1977, Ernie and Barb moved the family to Oliver while preparing for retirement. They had several small businesses and jobs over the years as long as they didn’t interfere with their traveling.
Ernie and Barb traveled extensively, RV’ing across Canada, throughout the US and Mexico They also traveled overseas spending time on 6 of the 7 continents, only missing Antarctica.
Ernie was a charter member of the Oliver Lions Club and was instrumental in the formation and building of Lions Park. He was a member at Fairview Mtn Golf Club when members got together and renovated and worked on the old clubhouse.
He enjoyed tinkering in the garage, often had a little wood work project on the go and he could fix anything. His two biggest passions when not traveling were winemaking and golfing.
Donations are gratefully accepted for the Freemason Cancer Van or the Cranbrook-Kimberly Hospice Society.
