Wildfire crews and ignition specialists are preparing to burn off 300 hectares of fuel today during their chess game against the Nk’Mip Creek wildfire.

This planned ignition on the northwest flank will depend on the weather. The objective is to remove the fuel between the guard lines and the head of the fire.

“Removing this fuel in a controlled manner that is safe for crews and equipment will reduce the risk of spotting and growth to the north west and will aid keeping the fire out of the front country,” says the BC Wildfire Service.

Meanwhile, three wildfires burning south of the United States border may be visible from Osoyoos, Grand Forks, Midway, Rock Creek and surrounding areas.
Winds in northeast Washington state, where these fires are burning, are pushing the fires south, away from the border, according to the BCWS.
“There is no threat to Canadian communities or values from these fires at this time,” the BCWS says.
