A burning barrel on Pineridge Drive in Oliver this morning got some quick attention by the Oliver Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to a burning complaint in the small community off Black Sage Road.

Media relations officer Rob Graham said the property owner did comply by extinguishing the fire with water.

Graham said it wasn’t clear why the burning barrel was being used in these dry conditions.

“There is some jurisdiction issues being on the OIB (Osoyoos Indian Band). We can issue a ticket but not sure how enforced it would be.”

Graham said he has heard that a burning ban will be issued by the OIB at some point today.

In the meantime, he encourages everyone to be very careful with their activities during these “extreme” fire conditions.

He added that firefighters in these conditions are subject to heat exhaustion and need to conserve their energy for other emergencies.
